Illegal Cheese Heads Sentenced to Hard Time

A husband and wife sentenced for smuggling diseased cheese into Miami

A husband and wife from Miami may be feeling rotten after being sentenced to more than two years each in prison for smuggling bad cheese into the country.

Yuri Izurieta, 41, and Anneri Izurieta, 46, have been sentenced for sneaking in the “diseased” cheese, containing Salmonella, E. coli, and Staphylococcus aureus, federal prosecutors said Friday.

Anneri Izurieta was sentenced to 40 months in prison on five counts of smuggling goods into the U.S. and for violating probation. Yuri Izurieta received 27 months behind bars.

The pair owned Naver Trading, Corp., which was placed on two years probation.

All parties, including the business, were found guilty on May 11.

Prosecutors said the Izurietas sold more than 4,980 kilograms of illegal cheese despite warnings by authorities.

Their attorneys names weren't immediately known.
