Child Burned After Pressure Cooker Explodes: Family

A Fort Lauderdale toddler is in the hospital Tuesday morning with burns covering 60 percent of her body after her family said a pressure cooker exploded in her home Monday night.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue crews said a piece of the pressure cooker blew off inside the family's home, located in the 1200 block of Southwest 24th Avenue, around 6:30 p.m. Monday.

They said the girl was burned over 60 percent of her body by steam and overflow of the contents of the cooker.

The girl's grandfather told NBC 6 he wasn't sure how close the two-year-old child was standing to the pressure cooker when the accident occurred, and the family was terrified when it happened.

The girl was rushed to Broward Health Medical center, then airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital's burn unit where she remained Tuesday morning. Her exact condition was not immediately known.

The grandfather said the toddler was recovering and her condition was improving.

Officials are working to determine what caused that piece of the pressure cooker to blow off.
