Girl, 2, Dies After Being Found in Deerfield Beach Pool

Sheriff Fire Rescue units and sheriff’s deputies responded to a report about a missing child from a residence, a fire official says

A 2-year-old girl was pronounced dead Saturday after her father found her unresponsive in a community pool near her Deerfield Beach home, according to Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue.

Julianna Lacerda was taken by helicopter to Broward Health Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead about 3:30 p.m., according to spokesman Mike Jachles.

"No matter how you look at it, this is a very sad tragedy that a 2-year-old managed to slip out from the house and end up in a pool," Jachles said.

About 2:30 p.m., Sheriff Fire Rescue units and sheriff’s deputies responded to a report about a missing child from a residence at the Independence Bay subdivision, Jachles said.

The girl was at home with her mother when she apparently slipped out of the house undetected, Jachles said. It wasn’t until later, when Julianna’s father returned home, that he noticed the girl had vanished, Jachles said.

The parents began looking for the child and called 911 to report her missing.

The child's home was a short distance from the pool. Her father found her in the pool, pulled her from the water and began giving her CPR. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue crews then "began aggressive resuscitation efforts," Jachles said.

Jachles said it wasn't immediately known how long the child was in the pool.

The girl's death is under investigation by the Sheriff's Office. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to confirm the cause of death, presumed to be drowning.
