A 16-month-old girl who was rescued from a backyard pool died later on Wednesday at Plantation General Hospital, Margate Police said Thursday.

The drowning victim was identified as Savita Curtis, police said in a news release.

She was discovered unconscious in the family swimming pool at 6122 Southgate Blvd. in Margate late Wednesday morning by her mother, Samantha Rahim. Police officers who arrived on the scene immediately began CPR, until firefighters responded and continued to perform CPR, officials said.

Savita was taken to Northwest Medical Center, police said. She was subsequently transferred to Plantation General Hospital for more specific care, and was in critical condition.

But police said Thursday that she passed away at Plantation General.
