Child in Serious Condition After Falling From Balcony in Hialeah

A child was rushed to the hospital after falling from the fourth floor of an apartment building in Hialeah Tuesday. The incident happened just before 5 p.m. on West 68th Street and 3rd Avenue.

Hialeah Fire Rescue said a 1-year-old boy fell from a balcony. He was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center. The child suffered head injuries and was going in and out of consciousness. He is in serious condition but stable, officials said.

Cellphone footage showed the child lying in a pool of blood as paramedics worked on him.

Police tell NBC 6 the family members were inside the apartment when the boy slipped on the balcony without anyone noticing. The child fell on the parking lot's hard surface.

Family members found out when the child was spotted in the parking lot.

The boy's grandmother lives at the apartment. Police said the mother was not there at the time of the incident. A neighbor said the boy and his family also live in the same building but in another unit.

At this point, police say all signs point to the incident being a terrible accident, however, if investigators determine neglect, there could be criminal charges filed.
