Classmates Mourn Deaths of Teens Killed in Crash in Southwest Miami-Dade

A South Florida School is mourning the death of two classmates who were killed in a horrific crash in southwest Miami-Dade Monday, as a third teen injured in the crash continues his recovery.

Isaac Lipscomb went on Facebook live Tuesday to give a shout out to his friends from his hospital bed. He is the sole survivor of the crash, when a Mini Cooper slammed against a tree on Southwest 137th Avenue near the Turnpike.

Schoolmate Isiah West died instantly, as did Samir Barrera. All of them were students at Keys Gate Charter High School in Homestead.

At a vigil Tuesday evening, balloons with messages of love were released into the night sky to honor the lives of West and Barrera. Dozens of students, parents and faculty gathered in prayer and shared hugs and tears remembering the teens.

"Really shocking, the fact that I saw him one day and the next day he is in the hospital," Lipscomb's friend, Joaquin Prado, said. "And you know teachers, they were crying, students were crying."

"It's been a quiet day, not everybody's the same," student Jamar Blocker said. "You can tell something happened and something was up."

Police say 18-year-old Barrera was driving, tried to maneuver around traffic, lost control and collided with the tree. He was ejected, so was West, 17. Lipscomb, 18, was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

Police are working to determine the cause of the crash.

Lipscomb is on the football team, West was too. Barrera was on the wrestling team. His coach, Daren Anguiano, like many others visited the crash site Tuesday with fond memories of his wrestling star.

"I appreciate his love for the team, I appreciate his love for his brothers, my brothers, and always standing up for his coaches, appreciate his dedication to improve himself," Anguiano said. "He is at peace now, I know that for a fact."
