Man Found Guilty in Key West Bombing Plot

A man accused of plotting to set off a backpack bomb on a Key West beach has been found guilty.

Federal agents say Harlem Suarez, 25, planned an attack with two undercover operatives in 2015. The FBI busted Suarez when they say he accepted a fake bomb from an informant posing as an extremist.

A federal jury found Suarez guilty Tuesday of attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and supporting terrorism.

Prosecutors said Suarez wanted to detonate a bomb that could be activated with a cell phone. Court documents say Facebook postings got the attention of authorities, tracing Suarez to attempts to recruit people to join ISIS in committing violent acts.

His attorneys said there’s nothing to that and that any supposed ISIS connection was just talk. Suarez is facing a lengthy prison term at sentencing, scheduled for April 18.
