Coast Guard Offloading $3 Million in Marijuana and Cocaine in Miami Beach

The Coast Guard offloading more than $3 million worth of seized cocaine and marijuana in Miami Beach Friday.

The estimated 2,100 pounds of marijuana and 35 kilograms of cocaine were seized in two operations earlier this month in the Caribbean Sea and near the Bahamas.

On May 2, a Coast Guard helicopter located a go-fast vessel near the Bahamas. The suspects fled, leaving the boat behind off the coast of Haiti with some 220 pounds of marijuana worth about $199,600 on board, officials said.

The next night, the crew of Coast Guard cutter Charles Sexton successfully stopped a go-fast boat with five people on-board in the Caribbean Sea. The suspects had jettisoned bales of drugs into the water and about 1,895 pounds of pot and 35 kilos of cocaine worth about $2.8 million were recovered, officials said.

The five suspects were taken into custody.

Last week, the Coast Guard offloaded $1.9 million of marijuana in Miami Beach. About $110 million in cocaine was offloaded in April.
