Coast Guard Sets Safety Zone for Floatopia Event

The zone begins at the easternmost point of the northern main ship channel jetty and extends north to 5th Street

The U.S. Coast Guard announced it will establish a boat-free safety zone for Floatopia, an event where participants float on rafts off of South Beach.

Beginning at 10 a.m. and lasting through 8 p.m., authorities will restrict motor vessels from entering or anchoring in the zone east of the beach. The zone begins at the easternmost point of the northern main ship channel jetty and extends north to 5th Street.

Both home-made and store-bought floats are welcome.

The Coast guard said it will also prohibit alcohol from activity on the beach and in the water.

“We want recreational boaters to have fun on the water, but we can't tolerate boaters operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” said Cmdr. Darren Caprara. “Please help to keep our waters safe and do not drink and boat."
