Computer Glitch Causes Delays at Miami International Airport

A computer failure in the passport-control system caused a long backup for international travelers at Miami International Airport.
 
The airport's director of communication Greg Chin told the Miami Herald the system went down Sunday night, creating long lines. Then, the lights on the two runways went out about 8:20 p.m., making it almost impossible for planes to land on the runways and taxi to the terminal.
 
Officials say the U.S. Customs and Border Protection computer system went down around 6 p.m., forcing them to use a backup system. Chin says the passport control office, which processes an average of 2,000 passengers per hour, filled beyond capacity.
 
The computer system was restored before 8 p.m. and the runway lights came back on around 10 p.m.
