A man convicted in South Florida of supporting terrorists is seeking a lenient prison sentence, partly because none of the groups directly targeted the U.S.
Gufran Mohammed faces a maximum 15-year prison sentence after pleading guilty earlier this year. His lawyer says he should get only about eight years for conspiring to support the al-Shabbab terror group in Somalia and al-Qaida in Iraq.
Mohammed, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from India, faces sentencing Friday in Miami federal court.
Prosecutors say an undercover FBI employee posed as a terror financing middleman in an Internet chat room to pretend to work with Mohammed.
Co-defendant Mohamed Hussein Said of Kenya has pleaded not guilty. He's accused of identifying recruits for a Syrian terrorist group and helping finance Africa's al-Shabaab terror organization.
