A Miami police officer shot and killed a man last night during a struggle with the theft suspect last night in Overtown, police said.

The incident occurred just after 9:30 p.m. on NW 5th Ave. near 6th St. when the officer responded to a 911 call about a theft and found a man fitting the description of the suspect.

The officer confronted the suspect and after a brief struggle, the suspect was shot by the officer. The officer was bitten on the arm and may have been stabbed by the man, according to police. A knife was found at the scene.

The suspect, who wasn't identified, died at the scene. The cop, a five-year veteran and canine officer, was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

The officer had "a very aggressive bite mark to his body," said police spokesman Det. Willie Moreno.

The incident took place a block away from where 12 people were shot during a July 6 birthday party.

Police are still investigating the incident.
