Coral Springs High School Students Treated for Heat-Related Symptoms

More than a dozen students were treated for heat-related symptoms at a concert at Coral Springs High School Thursday afternoon, officials said.

The students were at an outside concert when they started experiencing the symptoms, Coral Springs Fire Department Division Chief Mike Moser said.

"We stepped onto the parking lot, the sun hit us and within 10 min of standing out there you're sweating and trying to find shade or a sip of water, it was unbearably hot I should say," student Rashard Paul said.

A total of 14 students were evaluated and three were taken to nearby hospitals, Moser said.

"When you compact that many people together, there's no ventilation, there's no where for the heat to go and that's what probably made the conditions even worse," Moser said.

School board officials said one student who has asthma was taken to a hospital, and another student was brought to a hospital by her mother.

Temperatures reached 86 in Coral Springs Thursday, but it felt like 93 with the humidity.

"It was just really hot out here, it's Florida, so it's hot and there wasn't a lot of shade, there's 3,000 students," student Alison Feldman said.

The concert was featuring Drake Bell as part of his High School Nation tour. It was a fundraiser for the school's arts program.
