A man arrested in connection with a Craigslist robbery in Coral Springs was denied bond in court on Thursday.

Duwayne Lewis is accused of posting a bogus Craigslist ad to sell a Samsung Galaxy phone and then attempting to rob a buyer with his criminal counterpart Jason Mageau, who died when the robbery went awry.

Police said they found Mageau lying on the floor with a gunshot wound when they arrived in the area of 2900 Riverside Drive at around 12:19 A.M. on Wednesday. Lewis, claiming to be Mageau’s friend, was also at the scene, police said.

Lewis told police that the buyer Dermaine Spencer attempted to rob them. Lewis said Spencer shot Mageau after they refused to comply with the robbery.

Mageau was taken to Broward Health North and later died, according to police.

Police said they later received a call from Spencer who said it was Lewis and Mageau who tried to rob him when he showed up to purchase the phone. Spencer said he fired his own gun and struck Mageau after Mageau brandished a firearm and used it to hit him over the head.

Lewis has been charged with murder for his involvement in the robbery and the subsequent shooting death of his friend Mageau, police said.

Spencer will not be charged since he was acting in self defense, according to police.
