After 22 pilot whales washed ashore Fort Pierce Saturday, crews worked tirelessly to save those they could.

According to WPTV, only five of the whales were able to be saved.

The five juvenile whales were taken to Harbor Beach Oceanographic Institute's Rehabilitation Center in Fort Pierce to be evaluated, a SeaWorld Orlando release said. Two males and three females were among the rescued.

SeaWorld Orlando said the whales were receiving 24 hour care.

It remains unknown why the whales were stranded.
