Crews Search Biscayne Bay for Missing Boater

There is an active search for a woman assumed to have fallen overboard in the vicinity of the Biscayne Bay during a Sunday boating trip, the U.S. Coast Guard says.

Multiple crews are actively searching for the woman, including teams from the U.S. Coast Guard, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation.

FWC was the lead agency on the search. The case has since been turned over to Miami-Dade Police who are working to contact the woman's family.

Officials say the rescue search was especially difficult due to choppy water conditions which forced officials to greatly expand the search site.

According to USCG, the woman, along with a man and another woman, was on a boating trip from Stiltsville to Matheson Hammock Park at 9610 Old Cutler Road on Sunday. The other two assumed the woman was asleep in her cabin, but once they arrived to the park, they saw that she was missing. They immediately notified authorities around midnight.

The missing boater is a 26-year-old woman from Jacksonville, USCG says. The man and the other woman are from Miami.

The three are reported to be friends and were partying near Stiltsville. None were wearing life vests, according to FWC.

It is not clear whether alcohol or foul play factored into the accident, but nothing is being ruled out at this time, police sayl.

This is a developing story and will be updated as new information becomes available.
