Cuba Prepares for Threat of Hurricane Matthew

While Hurricane Matthew is expected to be a bigger threat to Haiti, the danger to Cuba is severe enough that storm preps are being supervised by Raul Castro.

The Cuban leader visited the eastern parts of the island Monday, including the province of Santiago De Cuba. This area is filled with farms and smaller cities. Castro ordered the installation of speaker systems to keep people informed about the approaching storm.

Residents who live in low-lying areas and offshore islands are moving into temporary shelters in government buildings.

Cuban officials say as many as 225 thousand people may have to evacuate if Hurricane Matthew maintains its intensity.

The U.S. Navy has already evacuated 700 spouses and children from the military base in Guantanamo Bay. Those remaining behind are the personnel who protect the base and the detention facilities housing terror suspects.
