Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase has announced that quarterback Jay Cutler will make his debut on Thursday.
Cutler was expected to play in Thursday's game, after sitting out Miami's first preseason contest. The veteran QB led the first-team in practice, prior to Gase's announcement on Tuesday. Miami is set to take on the Baltimore Ravens in a game that will be held at Hard Rock Stadium.
It is likely that Cutler will see limited action, as Miami needs to be careful with the quarterback. After losing Ryan Tannehill for the season, the Dolphins inked Cutler to a one-year deal valued at $10 million. If Cutler ends up sidelined, Miami would once again have to turn to veteran backup QB Matt Moore.
In last week's preseason game against the Atanta Falcons, Moore was given the start. Even though Cutler was already signed and attended practice, Miami opted to give him a little extra time to get acclimated.
Cutler has taken the field before with Gase on the sidelines and the results were spectacular. With Gase coaching, Cutler had 21 touchdowns and 3,659 yards in the air during the 2015 season. That combo effort came while both men were members of the Chicago Bears. Gase would go on to become Miami's head coach prior to the following season.
Before Miami came calling, Cutler was ready to settle into a post-playing career. The veteran had his 2016 season cut short by injury and had signed on for a broadcasting role. At 34, Cutler could still have something left in the tank however and will look to show that.
Thursday's preseason game against Baltimore will begin at 7:00 p.m.
