Cyclist Struck and Killed by Car in Plantation

Authorities are investigating after a bicyclist was struck and killed in Plantation Monday morning.

The incident happened at the intersection of Sunrise Boulevard and University Drive just after 5 a.m. The cyclist, 72-year-old Larry Cumbie, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver stayed at the scene and said he was driving to work and it was dark when he hit the cyclist.

"When I saw him it was too late," said the driver, who only gave his first name, Fernando. "And he appears from nowhere, I mean, the darkness."

The man was behind the wheel of a black Mazda which had a cracked window and dented bumper from where he hit the cyclist.

Investigators said the driver had the green light. Police believe it was an accident and said no alcohol or drugs were involved. No charges have been filed.

"I just tried to do the right thing, you know, call 911, emergency vehicles and everything," Fernando said. "But I don't know why, why he was in the middle of the street."
