John D. Schoonover, 62, was found dead at the scene after the airplane crashed nose down, Sheriff Ken J. Mascara said.
The plane, a single-seat, single-engine aircraft built from a kit, crashed on Range Line Road, south of Glades Cut Off Road west of Port St. Lucie, Mascara said.
The accident occurred at approximately 9 a.m. near the entrance to Treasure Coast Air Park.
Representatives of the Federal Aviation Administration were at the scene Monday. The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.
