Davie Police Lieutenant Overcomes Adversity, Moves Up Ranks

What to Know

  • Patricia Ravine received a promotion on Wednesday, after her near-death car crash almost three years ago, in the line of duty.

While facing trauma and pain, a sergeant received a promotion at the Davie Police Department after working through the injuries she got from a near-death experience while in the line of duty.

Thirty-five-year-old Patricia Ravine was promoted to lieutenant at a special ceremony Wednesday.

"Anything that comes your way, if you're willing to put your mind to making yourself overcome or achieve greatness, you can, but you have to be willing to do it," Ravine said.

Nearly three years ago, the then-Davie Police sergeant was helping a driver in another crash on I-75, when she was hit by the car in the nearby lane. She was airlifted and placed in the ICU at Broward Health Medical Center.

"Part of my injury was a brain injury, and I've overcome it significantly, but it's just the emotional part of it is something I'll deal with forever," Lieutenant Ravine said.

Ravine went through four months of physical therapy and had to learn how to walk again.

She and 10 other officers were promoted in a ceremony at Tree Tops Park in Davie. Ravine has been with the police department for 13 years and was never afraid to lead. She took the test to become a lieutenant twice before her accident.

"It is very important to me to model to my children that they can be anything they want to be," Ravine said. "No matter what bad things come your way."

Mayor Judy Paul and Ravine's coworkers agree.

"It just shows there's nothing that can stop you,” Lieutenant Steve Bart said. “That was my point to my kids, hard work will get you anywhere you want to go and she's the poster child for that."
