Death Investigation Causes Major Delays on South Florida Expressway, Florida Turnpike

A death investigation nearly brought one major South Florida roadway to a halt Tuesday morning.

Police responded to a call shortly after 3:30 a.m. where a woman's body was found on the ramp to State Road 874 – also known as the Don Shula Expressway - northbound from the Florida Turnpike.

Miami-Dade Police responded to the scene. Officials said it was unknown if the person was dead before she was left on the highway.

Motorists were not being allowed to connect from the Turnpike to that expressway, with traffic between Southwest 137th Avenue and Kendall Drive moving between 3 and 5 MPH at times – causing delays of up to three hours at one point.

The ramp re-opened shortly after 10:30 a.m.

The Florida Highway Patrol is currently investigating the cause of death. Troopers said the woman had a cut on the back of her head but there weren't obvious signs she was run over or hit by a car.
