A Southwest Miami-Dade neighborhood was stunned to learn a mother and her two young children were found dead in their home Friday.
Miami-Dade Police said the 29-year-old unidentified woman likely shot and killed her children, an eight-year-old girl and a one-year-old boy, before turning the gun to herself in an apparent murder-suicide.
Police said the father of the children came to his home located on Southwest 253rd Street and 132nd Avenue and called 911 after finding the bodies of the children and the his ex-wife.
Yahaska Chavarria lives a few doors down from the family and said they were fairly new to the neighborhood. She said the mother kept to herself.
Another woman at the scene told NBC 6 she was the 8-year-old victim's 1st grade teacher. Gertrudis Marin said the little girl wasn't in class Friday.
"I contacted the mom just to see how she was doing, how I would routinely do with my students," said Marin. "She never answered because this kind of surprised me because she's one too keep up with my messages."
Detectives were trying to figure out why the mom allegedly turned on her kids and herself. The investigation continues.
