Deputies Raid Alleged Puppy Mill in Clewiston

Deputies in Clewiston have shut down an unlicensed dog breeding facility, which they said put profit over the care of its animals.

They also arrested the owners on animal cruelty charges.

An animal rescue group is now teaming up with shelters, like the Humane Society of Broward County, to help save as many as 100 dogs.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the dogs were living in crowded, filthy pens without access to clean drinking water or food.

In addition, many of the dogs were suffering from various medical conditions, including skin and eye disease and severe dental issues.

The dogs were transported to a temporary shelter in an undisclosed location, where they will receive medical care from ASPCA veterinarians. The ASPCA will continue to care for the dogs at the temporary shelter until custody of the dogs is determined by the court.

Deputies believe this alleged puppy mill sold its animals to pet stores in Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

An investigation of the facility began after several complaints were made by individuals in the community.
