Authorities have apprehended a robbery suspect they say opened fire on a deputy in the Florida Keys.
Monroe County Sheriff's Deputy Josh Gordon was on the lookout for a man suspected in a robbery Saturday night. When deputies tried to stop the car, authorities said Timothy Thomas, 25, shot Gordon in the chest. The deputy was wearing a bullet proof vest and was not injured.
Thomas fled the scene but was captured at a home on Key West on Sunday. Authorities said they spoke with Thomas by phone and convinced him to surrender. He had two gunshots wounds sustained when he exchanged fire with the deputies from the previous night.
Authorities said Thomas has an extensive criminal history.
Thomas has been charged with attempted murder. He was initially charged with outstanding felony warrants from Martin and Orange Counties. He is wanted in Martin County for high speed wanton reckless driving and with driving with his license suspended. In Orange County he is wanted for violation of probation with the underlying charge of robbery.
On Monday, detectives filed charges against Thomas including attempted murder of a law enforcement officer with a firearm and use of a weapon to commit a felony.
There is no bond allowed on the charges.
