Miami-Dade Police are investigating after an officer shot and killed a dog Tuesday night.
The incident happened in the 600 block of Northwest 128th Court, Miami-Dade Police spokesman Roy Rutland said.
The dog's owner, Odalys González, told NBC 6 she'd had the dog, a female black Dutch shepherd, for seven years and she'd never attacked anyone.
Gonzalez said she'd received a phone call from a neighbor that the dog had gotten out and was laying under a neighbor's car.
"Apparently she jumped the fence, she got scared for whatever reason, I don't know if it was raining or it was thundering," Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez said another neighbor arrived home and called police after the dog started barking at him.
When she arrived home, Gonzalez said her pet was dead. She says animal control should have been called in to get the dog.
"The dog was not putting anybody in danger," Gonzalez said. "I thought they used excessive force, there was no need to kill the dog."
Rutland said the shooting is under investigation and said he wasn't able to give details on the incident.
