Dogs Attack 2 Women, Kill Small Dog in Hollywood: Police

Two women were seriously injured and a small dog was killed after two large dogs broke loose and attacked them on Friday in Hollywood.

Hollywood Police said Regina Bradford was out walking her wire-waired terrier, Roxy, around 12:30 a.m. in the 5900 block of Buchanan Street. Suddenly, a pair of 135-pound American Bulldogs escaped from their owner's trailer next door and lunged at them.

A neighbor who witnessed the attack ran out to try and help Bradford and ended up being mauled herself, police said.

Robbie Bradford, Regina's husband, ran out to try and help both his wife and the neighbor.

"I was beating the dogs to let them go," he said. "I was actually beating on both of the dogs to let the women go. As soon as you'd get one loose, the other one would grab."

Bradford said the dogs were on top of his wife and the other woman swinging them around. Neighbor Jessica Young dialed 911.

"One of the dogs on his wife just was tearing her like a rag doll," Young said of the attack. "She was just trying to protect the other lady. They were trying to protect each other."

Sadly, the Bradford's dog Roxy did not survive the attack. Robbie Bradford was left with the grim task of bagging up her remains. He described their 13-year-old pet as sweet and smart.

Officers arrived and tasered one of the large dogs in order to stop the attack. The other large dog ran away but was eventually found.

Police said both dogs were returned to their owner, Ricky Swearengin, under quarantine. However, Swearengin was later forced to turn the dogs over to Broward County Animal Control.

Swearengin said they are 9 and 7-year-old siblings named Daisy and Duke. While it hurt to give up his beloved dogs, Swearengin expressed concern for his neighbors.

"I'm worried about the ladies that got hurt," he said.

Both women were taken to Memorial Regional Hospital and are expected to be okay. Bradford has been released, while the neighbor who tried to help her is still in the hospital.

Hollywood Police said Swearengin has been given eight citations; two from police and six from the county.
