Dolphins Name Five Team Captains

The Miami Dolphins named their five team captains for the 2016 season on Wednesday.

Ryan Tannehill, Mike Pouncey, Cameron Wake, Reshad Jones and Michael Thomas earned the honors following an election among their teammates. Being named as a team captain comes with a responsibility. The captains are expected to lead by example both on and off the field.

There is a lot of variety in Miami's captains with the offense, defense and special teams all featured. This will allow leaders in all aspects of the game alongside the new coaching staff.

“The fact the we did have a good variety of people voted for ... is encouraging, because that means a lot of guys look up to guys than just those five,” head coach Adam Gase told the Miami Herald.

Tannehill leads the offense on the field every game as the quarterback, but his work must also come on the sidelines while the Miami defense is on the field. Preparing for the next drive and being a leader at all times can be the difference between a win and a loss. Being elected by his teammates shows that Miami recognizes Tannehill's ability to do just that.

“Every year I see this guy grow,” said receiver Jarvis Landry. “For the last three years, [he’s grown] more and more as a leader. It's something that this team needs. He stepped to forefront, and obviously being elected captain shows it.”

Miami will begin its regular season against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.
