Dressing Down the Pounds

When it comes to looking slim, fake it 'til you make it

Maybe you're planning on indulging at one more holiday feast before you start your 2012 weight loss resolution.

But why wait? A little wardrobe magic could make those pounds look like they've already disappeared.

Just ask Stephanie Whittingham, store manager at Dress Barn in Hollywood.

"You wanna choose key points that show off your best figure," she said.

So if you're sporting some extra pounds, live by her rule: "No clingy. Clingy is bad."

She recommends straight-legged pants, for a more symmetrical look, instead of skinny or flare, which can highlight problem areas.

Whittingham also likes empire waists -- which flatter pear-shaped bodies -- and gathering material, which forgives tummies.

Here are some other ways to make your wardrobe work to your advantage:

• Opt for A-line styles that elongate your figure
• Avoid stiff or bulky textures
• Avoid big embellishments or buttons near problem areas
• Watch out for turtlenecks that can widen the face
