A Major League Soccer game between the Seattle Sounders and the Kansas City Wizards wouldn’t normally generate much interest from South Florida, even if one of the teams is owned by comedian and Price is Right host Drew Carey.

But this game was a little different.

It’s outcome would determine whether a South Florida food bank that was devastated by fire earlier this month would receive a $50,000 donation.

Fortunately, the Sounders beat the Wizards 3-2 Saturday night, drawing cheers from Feeding South Florida, which recently changed its name from The Daily Bread Food Bank.

Carey, who owns the Sounders, made the promise Thursday morning on the Paul and Young Ron radio show.

Scoring the winning goal was Nate Jaqua, who not only helped feed the hungry in South Florida, he enabled his team to clinch a playoff berth, making the Sounders only the second team in Major League Soccer history to make the playoffs in their expansion year.

Feeding South Florida distributes food to the needy throughout Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Monroe counties.

On October 8, a warehouse fire destroyed 93,000 pounds of food, which is the equivalent of 62,000 meals.

The Jim Moran Foundation, based out of South Florida, also vowed to donate $50,000 to the food bank.

Carey also recently vowed to donate a million dollars to Lance Armstrong’s Livestrong Foundation if he accumulated a million Twitter followers.

Right now he has just over 103,000 followers. Here is his Twitter account.
