Driver Sought After Boy, 7, Injured in Hit-and-Run in Miami

Police said the boy was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital after he was struck by the vehicle

Police are searching for a driver involved in a hit-and-run in Miami that left a 7-year-old boy hospitalized Monday.

The incident happened in the 7000 block of Northwest 6th Court, Miami Police officials said.

According to police, the boy was playing football in the street in front of his house when he was struck by the car.

Police said the boy was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital after he was struck by the vehicle, which fled the scene. He suffered a knot to his head and had road rash on his face but was expected to be okay.

The boy, Jay'lyn Smith, spoke with NBC 6 at the hospital Tuesday.

"I caught the ball, I was walking across the street, the car just came and hit me," he said.

The car was described as a four-door Chevy Impala, newer model, with dark tinting.

Smith's cousin, Antonette Frazer, had a message for the driver.

"Turn yourself in, because he’s seven years old, you could’ve traumatized him, you could’ve killed him, just do the right thing and turn yourself in," Frazier said.

Police are asking anyone with information to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
