A man driving in Hialeah struck a man on a bike, three cars, a tree, and a church.
A driver is in custody after his car struck an older man on a bicycle, three cars, a tree, and a church fence in Hialeah.
"I was coming this way, and he was coming that way," said bicyclist Edgar Garcia in Spanish, gesturing to the intersection of West 68th Place and West 30th Lane.
Garcia said he was heading to Santa Barbara Catholic Church on West 30th Avenue when he saw the driver heading straight for him and was able to avoid serious injury.
"I was able to see him coming. If I hadn't seen him, he would have pinned me against the fence," he said. "Thankfully, I was able to dive out of the way."
After striking Garcia, the driver hit three cars and a tree before smashing into Santa Barbara's fence and coming to a stop, police said.
The driver was shortly observed in police custody, peeking from the back of a police cruiser.
It is not yet known what charges have been filed against him, or what caused him to strike the cyclist and other vehicles.
For Garcia, it was a narrow shave requiring only a bandage near his knee.
"I was lucky. I was struck [on my backside], but I didn't want to go to the hospital. They gave me the case number in case I feel ill later and want to go...If I had been looking down on my bike, I might not have seen him."
