El Portal Mayor Calls for Stricter Gun Laws in Wake of Shooting

Mayor, village commissioners call for ban on high powered assault weapons

A day after a man was gunned down in the small Miami-Dade community of El Portal, the mayor of the village will join other officials in calling for stricter gun laws.

Mayor Daisy Black an members of the El Portal Village council are holding a news conference Tuesday afternoon to discuss banning high powered assault weapons in the wake of Monday's shooting.

Gas Station Clerk Shoots, Kills Would-Be Robber

Authorities say 26-year-old Kori Clark was shot while standing in the street in the area of Northeast 90th Street and 2nd Avenue around 4:30 p.m. He later died.

It was the first assault weapon attack in El Portal and the first shooting in the community in at least five years, village officials said.

Suspect Killed in Miami-Dade Home Invasion

It's unknown who shot Clark and police haven't said what the motive for the shooting was.

Black and the village council will speak at 3:30 p.m.
