Elderly Man Killed by Hit and Run Driver

Witnesses told Miami Police that a silver or gray Mazda fled eastbound after hitting the pedestrian, who was crossing the street with the assistance of a walker.

A homeless man was struck and killed by a hit and run driver in Little Havana early Saturday morning.

The victim, an elderly man, was crossing NW 7th Street at the intersection of NW 23rd Court around 6 a.m. when he was struck. Witnesses told Miami Police that a silver or gray Mazda fled eastbound after hitting the pedestrian, who was crossing the street with the assistance of a walker.

"I saw the old man crossing and the car hit him and picked him up, and he didn't even stop," said Omar Saoz. "He kept going like nothing happened."

The victim, who was known in the area to be homeless, was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center in extremely critical condition. He died shortly after arrival.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim, pending next of kin notification.

Police are still searching for the driver. The described him as a white male in his 50s wearing glasses. They said the vehicle has extensive front end and windshield damage.
