Elderly Woman Rescued From Little Haiti House Fire

Miami Fire Rescue officials said the security bars on the windows and doors made the fire fight a challenge and left the elderly woman trapped inside

An elderly woman was hospitalized after a fire broke out at a home in Little Haiti early Wednesday.

The fire broke out at a home in the 6600 block of Northwest Miami Court around 4 a.m. Miami Fire Rescue officials said the security bars on the windows and doors made the fire fight a challenge and left the elderly woman trapped inside.

"Firefighters concentrated their efforts on preventing that fire from reaching her while another crew went to the rear of the house and extricated her out of the room," Miami Fire Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll said.

Carroll said the woman's daughter came home just as the fire was breaking out. The daughter let firefighters know her mother was located in a room in the back of the house.

"The daughter who lives here with her elderly mother came home around that time and when she opened the door she was encountered by a lot of flames in the living room," Carroll said. "We did have to bust the door open to bring her out."

Fire officials said the elderly woman was transported to a local hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, but she is expected to be okay. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
