Email Shows Quotas for Some Miami Police Officers

An email from a Sergeant in the Miami Police Department set quotas for his crew for tickets, arrests, and watch orders for the Little Haiti area of Miami.

The email was first reported on by the Crespogram Report. NBC 6 has since confirmed with Miami Police the authenticity of the email.

The email, from Sergeant Jason Ferguson, is dated July 14, 2014 and was addressing the “Little Haiti ‘C’ Shift Crew.” Sgt. Ferguson told his crew that he “would like for each of you weekly to have a minimum of the following:

  • 5 (tickets)
  • 1-2 (arrest)
  • 5-10 (Watch orders/park and walks/directed patrol)

“To see something like this, especially when it hits you in the wallet, that’s not good. I don’t like it,” said one resident NBC 6 spoke to Friday.

State law prohibits ticket quotas for law enforcement, but it’s not a crime. The same law also doesn’t list any penalties for an agency that does set quotas. Miami Police refused to comment on the report.

NBC 6 reached out to the commissioner for the area of Little Haiti, but has yet to receive a response.
