A former Broward County teacher will spend six months on house arrest for stealing the identities of students.

Forty-four-year-old Sheyla Diaz of Pembroke Pines pleaded guilty to one count of identity theft in May, saying she filled out credit card applications using students' names. She was sentenced Friday.

Diaz used students' information to apply for at least 17 credit cards. She resigned from her job at Monarch High School in Coconut Creek in January.

Appearing in court Friday, she said "My crime was egregious and I lost everything near and dear to me."
