Ex-Wife Said She Never Saw Signs of Husband's Alleged Abuse

The ex-wife of a retired Miami Police officer accused of multiple counts of child pornography charges said Monday that she “never expected this.”

Juan Roman, 57, was re-arrested over the weekend following a search warrant of his home last month. At the time, Roman was charged with possession and distribution of child pornography.

When detectives continued going through evidence this week, they allegedly found disturbing videos which they said were filmed with a hidden camera inside his home. Authorities allege that the former detective who retired from the force about 5 years ago--filmed himself fondling a 7-year-old child.

Roman’s wife, a former sex offender parolee officer, told NBC 6 that everything involved in the case, “hurt’s my heart.”

“My heart goes out for that,” Iris Espinosa said. “I loved this guy. I was married to him for eight years. I never expected this.”

Espinosa said that during the eight years of her marriage to Roman, she never “noticed anything.” The couple divorced in 2010 and Espinosa said the last year of the marriage was rocky and led to her having a mental breakdown.

“I was disgusted. I didn’t want to see him because I knew something, something was going through my mind, but I wasn’t sure what it was,” Espinosa said. “I thought he was having an affair, I don’t know.”

The only suspicious activity Espinosa noticed was Roman’s use of his computer, which was the same computer investigators claimed contained child pornography.

“It was a lot. It was many, many hours, many hours on the computer and we had many fights because of that,” Espinosa said.

Roman faces 3 felony counts of lewd and lascivious molestation of a child. He was held with no bond and remains in jail.
