Florida Highway Patrol troopers in Miami-Dade were given extra time off for issuing lots of traffic citations, according to a report by the Miami Herald and the Times Tallahassee Bureau.
The report affirmed that state officials are examining the practice in which FHP troopers were given extra weekends based on their “performance.”
Terry Rhodes, executive director of the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, told the Herald/Times that the practice is wrong and it must end.
The FHP was most recently under fire after another report revealed that officers in one troop were told in an email from Maj. Mark Welch to write “two citations each hour,” but added that it’s not a quota.
According to current state law, a traffic enforcement agency may not establish traffic citation quotas.
