FPL Prepares for Tropical Storm Erika

If Tropical Storm Erika does indeed hit the sunshine state, Florida Power & Light says they are ready to keep you out of the dark.

FPL says they've spent $2 billion since Hurricane Wilma to make their power system stronger and more equipped to handle the storm.

Designed by FPL employees, the company says smart maps and smart meters will enable them to identify, report and address outages much quicker than in years past.

New concrete polls erected over the past several months are able to withstand winds of 145 mph. Thats about a mid-level Category 4 hurricane

"Everything that we've been doing is to get the power back on faster," said FPL lineman specialist Esteban Perez. "We don't want you to be out for a month, we want you to be out the shortest amount of time possible."

FPL also advises residents to trim trees or shrubs that are near power lines in order to help prevent possible outages.
