Naked Gun 305: Nude Man Shoots DEP Officer During Traffic Stop

Environmental Protection officer airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital, but expected to be OK

A Florida Department of Environmental Protection officer ended up in the hospital Wednesday after he was reportedly shot by a naked man in South Miami-Dade, witnesses said.

Guy Gilbert was shot in the area of U.S. 1 and 344th St. around 10 a.m. during a traffic stop in Florida City, according to authorities. He was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital with non-threatening injuries to both of his hands.

The suspect was arrested on the scene, but authorities did not comment on if he was clothed.

Gilbert was named DEP's Officer of the Year in 2009.

According to witnesses, the gunman was driving a van when he was pulled over by Gilbert, who is not a police officer, but has the ability to arrest people. Police would not say why the officer pulled the man over.

The two began to scuffle and the fighting pair ended up on the ground.

Employees at a nearby restaurant said they heard Gilbert yell the suspect had a gun and a knife.

That's when gunshots rang out and the officer was hit in the hand as he tried to grab the gun, witnesses said. It's unclear if the man was driving the van naked or had his clothes pulled off during the scuffle.

"We do know there was a physical altercation that occurred. We do know that a firearm was discharged. The officer was struck on both hands,” said Detective Alvaro Zabaleta, a spokesperson for Miami-Dade police.

The restaurant employees also said the man was shocked with a stun gun by police and given a towel to cover up.

His identity and condition are unknown.
