Family Files Wrongful Death Lawsuit in Fatal Miami Gardens Police-Involved Shooting of Lavall Hall

The family of a man shot and killed in a police-involved shooting in Miami Gardens has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city and police department.

Lawyers for Lavall Hall's family filed the lawsuit Monday.

"In this case we have alleged damages of in excess of $20 million," attorney Bret Rosen said.

Last month, Hall's mother, Catherine Daniels, called 911 for help with her son, who was schizophrenic. The mother said she warned police about his mental health issues but the encounter ended with an officer shooting 25-year-old Hall dead.

Police said the officer opened fire after Hall attacked two officers with a broomstick.

Also named in the lawsuit is Stephen Johnson, the former Miami Gardens Police Chief who was fired over the weekend after being caught in a Broward Sheriff's Office prostitution sting.

"What we believe happened is was there was a lack of institutional control," Rosen said. "Miami Gardens Police Department did not have any control over their officers and it stems from the top."
