Family Makes Appeal For Information on Shooting of Armando Martin

Martin, 17, was fatally shot in the back on Sept. 10, 2011

It has been nearly eight months since 17-year-old Armando Martin was shot in the back multiple times.

Gunshots were heard near Northwest 55th Avenue and Northwest 3rd Street in Miami, police said, and Martin fell over a wall that surrounds a cemetery. His family rushed to the scene, devastated.

The teenager died shortly after arriving at Jackson Memorial Hospital on Sept. 10, 2011.

Since then information on just what happened the night of the shooting has been hard to come by, so police asked Martin’s family to make a public appeal, as family pleas often generate leads that can result in solving a case.

Martin’s family did so at the Miami Police Department on Thursday. His mother, clutching a color picture of her son, broke down in tears as she described a bright young man who wanted to be a doctor.

"It is so sad," Alina Martin said.

"We miss him every night," said cousin James Martin.

According to Miami Police detectives, an argument had erupted between teenagers and spilled out on the street.

Later a person in a blue Honda drove by and shot at the group, with Armando Martin taking several bullets. Police said Martin was not the specific target. They also said a second young man was slightly injured.

Detectives in the Martin case said they do have a person of interest: Miguel Carvajal, who disappeared the day of the shooting. He is the stepfather of one of the young men who confronted Martin, they said.
