Family Mourns Drive-By Shooting Victim

Investigators say at least three men stepped out of the car and opened fire, spraying more than 10 shots in the street.

It was a case of an innocent bystander being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

A drive-by shooting in a North Miami Beach neighborhood on Friday killed 49-year-old Kryon Richmond as he was mowing the lawn. Another victim, who was sitting in a car when shots were fired, is still in critical condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

In an exclusive interview with NBC 6's Marissa Bagg, Richmond's brother-in-law Leo Augustine mourns his family's loss.

"He was the most loving and caring person," Augustine said. "He was 6'2" but just a gentle giant."

North Miami Beach Police say Richmond and the other victim, who has not been identified, were gunned down by several men in a silver or gray Chevrolet Cruze in the area of North Miami Ave and NE 173rd Street. Investigators say at least three men stepped out of the car and opened fire, spraying more than 10 shots in the street.

Police are now searching for those gunmen. Detectives went door-to-door with flyers Saturday, hoping neighbors could lead them to the shooters.

Those who live in the area are now on edge.

"It's scary because my mom sits out on the porch and stuff," neighbor Michael Hebda said. "It could happen anywhere. This guy was mowing the lawn and all of a sudden, he's dead."

Richmond was known throughout the neighborhood as a kind man who helped with handyman work when needed.

"Ninety percent of the work done in my house the last 10 years, he did it," Augustine said. "From running my sprinklers to the bannisters and doing the columns, this morning it hit home for me."

Police are urging anyone with information on the shooting to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS (8477).
