Family of Walter Reyes, Cyclist Killed on Rickenbacker Causeway, Filing Lawsuit

The family of bicyclist who was struck and killed on the Rickenbacker Causeway announced they're suing the driver's family.

Walter Reyes was killed in January while training for a charity bike race.

"I guess it's fitting that he died doing something to help others," widow Maribel Reyes said at a news conference Friday.

Police said a 21-year-old driver using his father's car, Alejandro Alvarez, plowed into Reyes and his cycling partner, Henry Hernandez. Reyes died at the scene.

Alvarez is facing DUI charges related to Reyes' death. NBC 6 reached out to the attorney for the Alvarez family Friday but received no response.

"Stupid actions have tragic consequences, and it's amazing how many people keep dying on our roads and it's completely preventable," Maribel Reyes said.

Reyes and her daughters wore gold bicycle pendants to honor the husband and father while they used the news conference to urge people to take a cab or call a friend but not to drive drunk.

"Making that one person change their mind, think twice, that's all I need," Jennifer Reyes said.

The Reyes family is suing the Alvarez family in a wrongful death lawsuit, and their attorneys said they hope the lawsuit shines a light on the need to beef up DUI enforcement on Key Biscayne.

"How many does it have to be? How many times does it have to happen before we have more police presence there?" attorney Mike Eidson said.

Cyclist Aaron Cohen died the same way in the same place three years ago. His son is growing up without his father.

"When Mr. Reyes was killed, I got so angry, how can this happen again?" widow Patty Cohen said Friday. "How could we not have learned from previous accidents?"

Maribel Reyes said she now has a singular focus.

"I have two daughters, I have a life and now I have a mission and I'm gonna do it, and my husband would want us to do it," she said. "If there's anything that comes out of this that can save somebody's life, I'm gonna do it."
