Father & Daughter Hurt in Parasailing Accident

Malfunction puts two into water near Port of Miami

A father and his young child who were enjoying a parasailing outing in Miami Monday afternoon were injured when some sort of malfunction led to trouble.

The incident happened around 4 p.m., as the pair were out over the water near Bayside Marketplace in downtown.

The boat they were on may have lost power, according to Lt. Ignatius Carroll with Miami Fire-Rescue, causing the parasail to lower and drag them over the water and into a sea wall.

"The boat may have lost power and as a result, they had no control to bring the parasailers in," said Carroll, adding that the boat's captain decided to cut the two loose..

The father and his 6-year-old daughter were found near a barge at the Port of Miami. Carroll said the girl had gone under rough seas but was helped out of the water.

The two, who were in Miami on vacation, were taken to Ryder Trauma Center with minor injuries.

Jorge Pino, with Florida Fish and Wildlife, said there's an investigation into what exactly happened.

"It could have gone horribly bad...but now the investigation begins," Pino said. "Ultimately, somebody's gonna be held responsible for what happened."
