Father Charged in Death of Hallandale Beach Infant Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison

A father charged in connection with the death of his infant son found buried in the backyard of his Hallandale Beach home was sentenced to 10 years in prison Friday.

Calvin Melvin pleaded no contest to three counts of giving false information to law enforcement last month in the death of his six-month-old son, Dontrell Melvin.

The baby's body was discovered in a shallow grave in the backyard of 106 Northwest 1st Avenue on Jan. 11, 2013, about 18 months after he was last seen.

Melvin, 30, was initially charged with child neglect, but that charge was dropped. Brittney Sierra, the boy's mother, was also charged with child neglect and her charges were also dropped earlier this year.

Authorities said Melvin and Sierra blamed each other in the boy’s death.
