Father and Son Die After Breathing Tanker Fumes in Tampa

Authorities said the two men went inside the tanker to help a friend who thought there was something stuck inside.

Hillsborough County authorities say a father and his son have died from breathing fumes inside an empty asphalt tanker in Hillsborough County.

A sheriff's office statement says 53-year-old Ernesto Gonzalez died Sunday morning at Tampa General Hospital where he was taken in critical condition after the accident. His son, 29-year-old Luis Gonzalez, died at the hospital on Saturday.

Authorities say both men went to help a friend that drives an asphalt tanker who thought there was something stuck inside, causing it to drain slowly. The men went down into the tanker to check on it when they were overtaken by fumes.

Fire rescue found both men unconscious inside the tanker. Authorities say there was nothing inside the tank, just fumes from lack of ventilation.
