Fecal Bacteria Prompts Swimming Advisory for South Florida Beach

State health officials have issued a swimming advisory for a Miami-Dade beach after high levels of fecal bacteria were discovered.

The Florida Department of Health issued the advisory Wednesday for Crandon North Beach after samples of beach water did not meet the recreational water quality standard for enterococci.

Enterococci are normally found in the intestinal tract of humans and animals and can cause diseases, infections or illnesses for humans such as urinary tract infections and, though less frequently, meningitis and pneumonia.
