A FedEx plane made its final flight into Fort Lauderdale Wednesday before it was donated to the Broward County Aviation Department.
The Boeing 727 arrived around 10 a.m. at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, its permanent home where it will be used for training purposes, officials said.
The plane had been in use by FedEx for 18 years before the donation.
"We are very thankful for this most generous donation from FedEx," Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief said in a statement. "The aircraft will serve as a useful training tool for firefighters and as such assist in the protection of residents and visitors."
Since 2000, FedEx has donated 78 of its Boeing 727 aircraft to aviation schools, municipal and airport fire departments, colleges and museums for training and education.
The company is replacing old aircraft with more fuel efficient and lower emission cargo planes.
